► Scope:The conference will focus on the different interpretations of Orientalism that originated after the publication of Edward Said's seminal work Orientalism. It will also deal with the Chinese presence and heritage in Latin America, North America, and the Caribbean (including the Spanish-speaking, Francophone, and Anglophone Caribbean). ► Topics:Possible topics include the following:1. Orientalism.2. Strategic Orientalism.3. Self-orientalization.4. Occidentalism.5. Chineseness in the Americas.6. 'Cooleism'.7. Essentialism.8. Representation of Chineseness and Orientalism in the literature of the Americas.9. Chinese literature and culture in the Americas.10. Nationalisms and the Chinese as the «other».11. Chinese testimonials, memoris, and autobiographies in the Americas.12. Chinese women in the Americas and their representation.13. Transculturation, hybridity, and assimilation.14. Erasure and misrepresentation.15. Chinese religiosity and 'witchcraft' in the Americas.16. White supremacy and the Chinese.17. Chinatowns in the Americas.18. Chinese identities, cultural difference, and de-ethnification.19. Western travellers in China and China in Western imaginaries.20. Chinese transnationalism, exile, and 'inner exile', etc.► Call for papers: Those interested are invited to submit a one-page abstract in Spanish, English, or French, dealing with any of the aforementioned topics or any other topic related to the concept of Orientalism and/or the Chinese presence in Latin America, North America, and/or the Caribbean.
