Rafael Negrete-Portillo is a researcher, university educator, and internationally award-winning playwright. He holds a PhD in Literary Studies from the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM, 2026), graded Sobresaliente cum laude and awarded the International Mention. He conducts his research and collaborates as a consultant at UCM, and has undertaken international research stays at the University of Vienna and Trinity College Dublin.
His work focuses on Literary Studies, Children’s and Young Adult Literature (CYAL; Literatura Infantil y Juvenil, LIJ), literary theory, narratology, and theatre studies. His research develops specifically literary definitions of “lo infantil” and “lo juvenil” as operational critical categories, moving beyond approaches based primarily on age, psychology, pedagogy, publishing classifications, or institutional frameworks. His methods include close reading, comparative and thematic analysis, narratology, sociocriticism, dramaturgical analysis, and practice-as-research.
He is currently extending his published theoretical model of childhood towards a literary-critical definition of “lo juvenil” and researching dissertation-by-publication versus traditional doctoral thesis formats. His theatre research encompasses Spanish Golden Age and contemporary theatre, dramaturgy, documentary theatre, and the theoretical and practical renewal of Cubist theatre through writing, staging, and performance.
